In the 2018/19 academic year, I served as artistic director for Paris/Atlantic, the American University of Paris's literary and creative arts magazine.
We solicited submissions of writing and art from the university community, with an acceptance rate of about eighty percent. I was responsible primarily for the final selection of art and the layout of the magazine.
We had free reign in design, including how large the magazine would be. We started with a blank slate, letting the submissions speak to us on their own (no theme was imposed). We did the first layout of the magazine on the floor of my apartment, with printed thumbnails of each piece painstakingly arranged and re-arranged.
We had permission from the artists to rearrange, cut, and flip their photos for layout.
Below are a selection of layouts from the magazine. The full digital magazine is available at issuu.com/parisatlantic.
