Columbia Publishing Course 2023—Digital Media Brand Workshop

The Columbia Publishing Course is a six-week intensive course on all aspects of book, magazine, and digital media publishing. Haunt was created as part of the digital media brand workshop. Our group of fourteen was tasked with creating a digital media brand in the entertainment sector. We took on roles within the "company," Haunt, covering all aspects from editorial to business to social media. I took on the web design, and worked with our digital product manager and our creative director to launch this prototype.

Haunt: The Home for Horror delivers a fearfully thoughtful, approachable, and multimedial view of horror as an artform and subculture for the modern fan looking for more of what they love. Our website delivers on our mission by providing fans with new ways to explore and think about the genre, with thought-provoking articles and a simple design that lets our impressive content shine. In tandem with our linked social media channels, the Haunt website gives fans the opportunity to communicate, deepen bonds, and welcome new friends to an ever-expanding community.

Haunt’s website is designed to be easily navigable and user-friendly for our wide-ranging demographic, with a standard layout and legible text. Our global navigation includes categories based on media (film, games, books, etc.) to ensure users can quickly find what they want and explore new media. Our footer contains the same categories and their accompanying subcategories, links to our about page, our contact page, our subscriptions (also up top), and the obligatory search, privacy policy, and terms of use.

Our website features iconic horror imagery on a simple layout, which allows the content to shine without overwhelming users, attracting and retaining those new to horror. We feature photography and film stills, posters, book covers, and other premade graphics to showcase the classic and modern art that we all know and love. Our colors are a bold, modern take on the iconic retro-camp palette. This iconic style is continued in the black background of the website homepage. Haunt’s best work is highlighted in feature articles on the homepage enlarged to attract users directly from the homepage.
